That you no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. For we have spent enough of our past time living in the desire of the Gentiles , and to have walked in lewdness, lusts, drunken binges, orgies, carousing, and abominable idolatries. 1 Peter 4:2-3 (WEB)

How old are you? 15,20,30,40,50,60 years old? How have you spent the last five, ten, fifteen, twenty and thirty years of your life? To what did you devote the prime and the cream of your years? How much of your past years did you invest in things that will outlast you? How much of your past did you spend doing things that tip the scale in heaven’s favor? What can God say about the past time of your life? Of onesimus, it was said that “in time past he was unprofitable”(Philemon 10,11). Is that true of you? Are your past profitable or unprofitable unto God? How much of your past did you spend in the service of God? Or it was spent in the service of sin and Satan? How much did you spend in the pursuit of what really matters in life? Was it spent knocking the rough edges off your life and getting yourself ready for the role you want to play in life? Was it spent running the rat race and acquiring the gloss and glitters of life-things you will leave behind at death? Was it gallivanting, gyrating, carousing and goofing around? Was it spent watching TV programs that carry sexual overtones and whet your appetite for sin? Was it spent frequenting clubs and scenes of epicurean excesses and frontal nudity? Was it spent with your lover billing and cooling? Was it spent flaunting your luscious and voluptuous body, cat walking and playing in the field? Was it spent promoting moral and spiritual darkness? Was it spent reducing the number of virgins in the land? Was it spent fighting the lord’s battle and bringing territories under his imperial banner? Was it spent increasing “transgressors among men”? (Proverbs 23:27,28). Was it spent in rebellion, disobedience and folly? Was it spent promoting licentious activities that take the edge off people’s appetite for righteousness? Was it spent gratifying the desire if the flesh and pursuing the vanities and frivolities of this world? Was it spent keeping up with the Joneses? Then, you have wasted much time. What you have left is the rest of your time. And God’s verdict on your profligate past is very clear: Unprofitable.

Reading between the lines, it appears that the recipients of the epistle of Peter were people who had wasted so much time pursuing vanities of life before they came to their senses. Obviously, they had spent so much time doing things that run contrary to the will of God for their lives. Apparently, they did not offer God the first half of their lives. Apostle Peter made them realize that they don’t have a lifetime to offer God anymore. It is only a man that starts with God in the days of his youth that can offer God a lifetime; after the season of youth, you can only offer God the rest of your time. Peter urged them to devote the rest of their time in the flesh to one thing: the will of God. The will of God is the only worth living for on this side of eternity. Solomon came to this realization after he had goofed around and when he was already on the precipice of eternity. He said, “let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter, fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man”(Ecclesiastes 12:13). The will of God is the basis for which God will judge you when you stand before him to give account of your life. Every other thing you are doing is secondary. The will of God is the only thing that will outlive the sun, the moon and the stars. Your life only counts when it is spent living the will of God for your life. It is the only thing that endears a man to God. Your figure 8 may endear you to men but it is only the pursuit of the will of God that earns you respect with God. Of David God said, “I have found David…a man after my own heart that will fulfill all my will” (Acts1 3:2). Every other thing is a waste of time, energy and resources. The only man the devil respects on the earth is the man doing the will of God.
